Reading for Resilience in South LA

Kids in Los Angeles have had a hard start to the year, and they need your support now more than ever. The youth of South Los Angeles continue to face generational inequity in their community - producing financial hardships and threatening educational opportunities. Nationally, we are seeing a decline in reading levels and chronic school absenteeism, with many students falling below grade level—the largest percentage since 2002! At a local level here in South LA, these challenges are amplified by external factors that hinder access to educational opportunities and stability, like elevated fear around immigration status.

With your help, we can address these gaps by providing targeted literacy support through academic assistance, 1:1 tutoring, mentorship, and program offerings designed to ensure every youth at A Place Called Home is reading and comprehending at grade level. We are here to turn a page and ensure that every youth at A Place Called Home receives the support they need to live a successful, impactful and healthy life.

The impact is clear: we must act now and provide our students with the skills and resources they need to overcome the barriers they face. Together, we can empower students in our community to improve their reading skills, build resilience, and create a brighter future—one where every child, regardless of their circumstances, has the opportunity to succeed. We are asking for your support in helping us raise $25,000 for our Reading for Resilience campaign this spring.
